I-64 East Reopens at HRBT; Delays Persist After Vehicle Fire [HAMPTON, VA]
I-64 East reopens at HRBT following a vehicle fire that caused the closure of all eastbound lanes at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel for the majority of Tuesday. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reported that one eastbound lane has reopened, but the right lane remains closed as inspections and assessments continue.
VDOT’s bridge engineers and operations staff conducted an initial inspection of the affected area, confirming that the bridge structure is “structurally sound and safe for motorists,” with no significant damage compromising the bridge’s integrity or safety. However, the right eastbound lane closure is still in effect to ensure a thorough assessment of the road conditions and to identify any necessary repair plans.
The fire, which occurred on the Hampton side of the HRBT, resulted in extensive traffic delays, with congestion stretching back several miles. Emergency response teams, including Norfolk Fire-Rescue, Naval Regional Fire, and Hampton Fire-Rescue, were promptly on the scene, along with state police and Hazmat units. Despite the severity of the situation, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the vehicle fire remains under investigation.
A detour is currently in place at exit 267, Settlers Landing Road, to redirect motorists away from the affected area. Virginia State Police have confirmed that this incident was not related to a crash, and traffic remains heavily impacted as crews work to clear the scene and fully reopen the road. The eastbound lanes of the HRBT are expected to be closed for an “unknown time” until the final assessment is completed and necessary repairs are executed.
Compensation for Victims
In incidents like this, victims may be entitled to various forms of compensation depending on their circumstances. For motorists who suffered vehicle damage or incurred additional expenses due to the detour and delays, compensation claims may cover repair costs, rental vehicle fees, and other related expenses. Moreover, if the vehicle fire resulted from negligence, such as poor maintenance of the vehicle or infrastructure, victims might be eligible to pursue a personal injury claim.
In situations where a vehicle fire leads to severe damage or personal injury, victims may also be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Even though no injuries were reported in this particular incident, it’s crucial for those affected to understand their rights and the possible compensation they might be eligible for, especially if new information surfaces regarding the cause of the fire or any resulting damages.
