Child Killed in Dirt Bike Crash in Newsoms [SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA]

A child was killed and an adult was airlifted to a local hospital following a head-on collision between a dirt bike and a pickup truck in Newsoms, Southampton County, Monday evening, according to the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office. WAVY News 10 reported the crash on July 14, 2026. Deputies were called to the 32000 block of Barnes Church Circle at approximately 5:50 p.m. on July 13 and arrived to find a dirt bike — operated by an adult and carrying a juvenile passenger — had collided head-on with a pickup truck. The pickup truck’s driver was not injured. A helicopter transported the adult dirt bike operator to a local hospital. The juvenile passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital that same night. The crash remains under active investigation, and charges are pending.

The death of a child in a roadway collision is among the most devastating outcomes any family can face. When a juvenile is a passenger on a vehicle involved in a crash, the legal questions surrounding the tragedy can be complex. A child who is a passenger bears no fault for the operation of the vehicle they are riding in, and the family of a child killed in a roadway crash may have the right to pursue legal accountability regardless of how the investigation ultimately allocates fault between the drivers involved.

Under Virginia law, the family of a person killed in a crash caused by another party’s negligence may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Virginia’s wrongful death statute allows certain surviving family members — including parents — to seek compensation for funeral and burial costs, the loss of the child’s companionship, and the grief and suffering caused by this sudden and devastating loss. The existence of a criminal investigation does not necessarily prevent a family from exploring potential civil legal claims. Civil and criminal matters are separate legal proceedings that serve different purposes.

Head-on collisions on rural roads carry particular severity. Without the median barriers, divided lanes, and infrastructure present on major highways, a head-on crash on a country road can involve the full combined speed of both vehicles in a single impact. The injuries that result are frequently catastrophic and often fatal, particularly for unprotected riders who lack the structural protection of an enclosed vehicle.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that charges are pending. Investigators will continue working to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and whether any violations of law occurred. As the investigation develops, the specific conduct of each party — including speed, lane position, and whether either operator was licensed and authorized to operate the vehicle — will be central to any civil claim brought on behalf of the child’s family. Preserving the evidence gathered during the criminal investigation, and consulting with an experienced attorney early, can help ensure that a family’s civil rights are protected in parallel with the official process.
