Norfolk Man Dies After Motorcycle Crash on North Military Highway [NORFOLK, VA]

A 56-year-old Norfolk man died Tuesday afternoon after his motorcycle struck a curb and crashed on North Military Highway, according to the Norfolk Police Department. Officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of North Military Highway just after 12:50 p.m. on July 7, 2026, for a report of a motorcycle crash. Upon arrival, officers found Jason H. Stewart seriously injured at the scene. Stewart was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The Norfolk Police Traffic Unit is handling the investigation, and it remains unknown at this time whether speed or alcohol were contributing factors.
The preliminary investigation determined that Stewart was traveling northbound on North Military Highway when his motorcycle struck a curb and he lost control of the bike. North Military Highway is one of Norfolk’s most heavily traveled arterial corridors, carrying commuter and commercial traffic through a stretch of the city lined with businesses, intersections, and road features — including curbs, medians, and drainage structures — that present hazards for motorcyclists who leave the travel lane.
Single-vehicle motorcycle crashes can raise difficult questions because there may not be another driver immediately identified as responsible. Although many single-vehicle crashes involve only the rider, there are situations where other factors may warrant further investigation. Roadway conditions, visibility, vehicle condition, and other evidence may all help clarify how and why the crash occurred.
Determining whether another party bears legal responsibility depends on the specific facts established during the investigation. Preserving available evidence early, including photographs of the scene, vehicle condition, maintenance records, and the official crash investigation, can be important in evaluating any potential claim.
For the family of Jason Stewart, Virginia’s wrongful death statute provides a legal framework for seeking accountability and compensation when a loved one is killed due to negligence — whether by another driver, a government entity, or a manufacturer. Surviving family members, including spouses, children, and parents, may be entitled to recover compensation for funeral and burial costs, lost financial support, loss of companionship, and the grief and suffering caused by this sudden loss.
The Norfolk Police Traffic Unit’s investigation will work to establish the specific circumstances of this crash, but families need not wait for that process to conclude before consulting with an attorney. An experienced wrongful death lawyer can begin the independent work of evidence preservation and case evaluation alongside the official investigation.
