News: 1 sent to hospital after DWI suspect crashes car into Chesapeake residence

CHESAPEAKE, VA — A DWI suspect has been charged following a vehicle crash at a Chesapeake home early Wednesday that left one of its residents injured, according to WAVY.

While the exact location of the incident has not been released, Chesapeake Police responded to a residential neighborhood at around 1:00 a.m. after receiving a report of a house struck by a car.

Details remain limited, but Matthew Vincent Cannella, 36, was behind the wheel of a car that appeared to strike a mailbox and a street sign before slamming into the home, leaving one person inside bleeding.

According to the homeowner, his nephew suffered a possibly broken right ankle and left hand as a result of the crash and was rushed to a local hospital. Damage to the home is estimated to cost $100,000 in repairs.

Following an investigation, Cannella was arrested and charged with “serious injury, DWI vehicle with reckless disregard.” He is expected to appear in Chesapeake General District Court on Thursday at 8:15 a.m.
