Wrong-Way Pickup Truck Involved in Head-On Crash on Route 58, Two Seriously Injured [CHESAPEAKE, VA]

Two men were hospitalized — one with life-threatening injuries — after a pickup truck traveling the wrong way on Route 58 westbound struck an SUV head-on near the Suffolk city line in Chesapeake Sunday morning, September 27, 2026, according to the Chesapeake Police Department. Officers were called to the scene at approximately 7:39 a.m. The preliminary investigation determined that the pickup truck was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when it collided head-on with the SUV near the Hampton Roads Executive Airport. The adult male driver of the SUV was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The adult male driver of the pickup was also hospitalized with serious injuries. Route 58 westbound was closed at the Suffolk city line while investigators worked the scene, and Exit 13A north and south on I-664 was also closed for a period before all lanes reopened. The investigation into how and where the pickup entered the wrong side of Route 58 remains ongoing. Authorities have not yet announced whether speed, impairment, or another factor contributed to the crash.
Route 58 is a major east-west corridor connecting Chesapeake and Suffolk, including the area near Hampton Roads Executive Airport. Because police are still investigating how and where the pickup truck entered the westbound lanes traveling in the wrong direction, the circumstances leading up to the collision remain unclear. Investigators may review vehicle movements, witness statements, available video footage, physical evidence from the scene, and other information as they work to determine what happened.
Wrong-way crashes can raise significant questions about how a vehicle entered opposing lanes of traffic and what occurred before the collision. In this case, the preliminary investigation indicates that the pickup truck was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 58 when it collided with the SUV. If the investigation determines that a driver’s negligence caused or contributed to the crash, an injured person may have legal options through a personal injury claim under Virginia law.
For the SUV driver who sustained life-threatening injuries, potential legal options will depend on what the investigation establishes about how the collision occurred. Medical records, crash-scene evidence, witness statements, and other available documentation may become important when evaluating the injuries and losses resulting from the crash. Because authorities have not yet announced what caused the pickup to enter the wrong side of Route 58, it would be premature to attribute the collision to any specific factor.
Virginia’s contributory negligence rule can significantly affect claims arising from a head-on collision. The actions of the drivers involved and the specific circumstances surrounding the crash may become relevant when determining responsibility. Because the investigation remains ongoing, the available evidence will be important in evaluating the legal options of those injured.
