One Killed, Two Critically Injured After Hyundai Enters Path of Jeep on North Military Highway [NORFOLK, VA]

One person has died and two others remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries following a two-vehicle crash on North Military Highway in Norfolk Thursday morning, September 24, 2026, according to the Norfolk Police Department. Officers were called to the 2700 block of North Military Highway at approximately 9:06 a.m. for a report of a crash involving a Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV and a Hyundai Elantra sedan. The preliminary investigation determined that the Jeep was traveling northbound on Military Highway when the Hyundai exited from a parking lot and entered the path of the Jeep. Both drivers and a passenger who was riding in the Hyundai were transported to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. One of the three has since been pronounced deceased, with their identity to be released following notification of next of kin. North Military Highway between Robin Hood Road and Azalea Garden Road was closed in both directions for several hours while investigators worked the scene. The investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted by the Norfolk Police Department’s Traffic Unit.
The crash occurred in the 2700 block of North Military Highway in Norfolk. According to the preliminary investigation, the Jeep was traveling northbound when the Hyundai exited a parking lot and entered its path. Because the investigation remains active, police have not yet released additional information about the circumstances leading up to the collision. Investigators may review vehicle movements, witness statements, available video footage, physical evidence from the scene, and other information as they work to determine what happened.
When a crash results in serious injuries and a death, determining whether another party may bear legal responsibility depends on what the investigation establishes. If evidence determines that another driver’s negligence contributed to the collision, surviving family members of the person who died may have legal options through a wrongful death claim under Virginia law. The two surviving individuals may also have potential personal injury claims depending on the circumstances established during the investigation.
Each person injured in the collision may have different legal options depending on their role in the crash and what the investigation determines about responsibility. The passenger in the Hyundai was not operating either vehicle, while both drivers’ actions may be examined as investigators determine how the collision occurred. Any potential personal injury claim will depend on the specific circumstances and whether another party’s negligence contributed to the person’s injuries.
Virginia’s contributory negligence rule can significantly affect claims arising from a two-vehicle crash. The actions of each driver and the specific circumstances surrounding the collision may become relevant when determining responsibility. Because Norfolk Police have described their findings as preliminary and the investigation remains ongoing, the available evidence will be important in evaluating the legal options of those affected.
