Red-Light Runner Causes Overturned Vehicle, Injures One [Chesapeake, VA]

A driver who ran a red light on Battlefield Boulevard South in Chesapeake triggered a two-vehicle collision that left one person injured and a car overturned on Wednesday, May 28, 2026, according to Chesapeake police and WAVY News 10. The crash occurred at the intersection of Battlefield Boulevard South and Johnstown Road and required a response from local emergency services.

According to Chesapeake Police Officer Leo Kosinski, a vehicle traveling northbound on Battlefield Boulevard South disregarded a red light and entered the intersection at Johnstown Road. That vehicle struck another car that was lawfully moving through the intersection, sending it rolling onto its side. Officers arrived at approximately 10:39 a.m. and began investigating the collision. A tow crew was called to remove both vehicles from the roadway while traffic continued to flow in the opposite lane.

Emergency responders assessed the scene and transported one person to a local hospital for treatment. The injured individual’s condition was not disclosed at the time of the initial report. Police are continuing their investigation into the crash.

Crashes caused by drivers who run red lights represent one of the most straightforward forms of negligence under Virginia law. When a driver violates a traffic control signal and causes a collision, that violation is strong evidence of fault. If you were injured in an auto accident caused by a red-light runner in Chesapeake or elsewhere in Hampton Roads, you may have grounds to pursue compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Virginia’s contributory negligence standard means that if an injured person is found even slightly at fault, they may be barred from any recovery. For that reason, preserving evidence early — including the police report, any available intersection surveillance footage, and documentation of your injuries — is critical. Consulting with an attorney before speaking with insurance adjusters is also strongly advised, as recorded statements can be used against you later in the claims process.

In crashes involving overturned vehicles, occupants face elevated risks of serious injury, including head trauma, spinal injury, and injuries caused by vehicle deformation. Even if you feel relatively unharmed after a rollover-involved collision, a full medical evaluation is strongly recommended, as some injuries may not produce symptoms immediately.
