News: Crews work to recover car that drove off Virginia Beach Fishing Pier
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Crews are working to recover an SUV that drove off the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier on Saturday, according to WAVY.
The SUV slammed through the gate at the entrance of the pier and drove off the end of it around 7 a.m.
It is unclear if anyone was in the vehicle when it crashed into the ocean.
Emergency crews responded to the scene within four minutes. Rescue swimmers were sent to find the vehicle and rescue anyone who was inside it. Officials had pulled the swimmers from the water by the time the police arrived.
The officers used sonar to look for the car. They found it in front of the pier. The sonar showed the vehicle to be on its roof and unstable. Crews will be unable to get into the vehicle until it is stabilized.
Strong currents and low visibility have prevented divers from accessing the SUV.
A crew from Crofton Diving Corporation attempted to recover the SUV from the water on Sunday, but the conditions were too violent. They will try to recover the SUV again when conditions are right.
