News: Crews dispatched to vehicle fire on I-664 SB in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — A section of southbound Interstate 664 in Newport News was closed Tuesday afternoon due to a vehicle fire, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The incident occurred at Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel South and was first reported by VDOT at 12:49 p.m.

Authorities have not specified whether a crash or mechanical problems caused the vehicle to catch fire, but all southbound lanes in the area were shut down as crews responded to the scene.

While no clearance time was immediately announced, motorists were warned of delays impacting the area.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
