News: 2 injured as pickup truck hits parked SUV in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — A crash involving a speeding pickup truck and a parked vehicle Wednesday evening in Newport News sent two people to the hospital, according to WAVY.

The accident happened near the corner of 28th Street and Jefferson Avenue, just after 9:00 p.m.

Newport News Police said a pickup truck was heading southbound on Jefferson Avenue at a high rate of speed toward the intersection when it struck a parked SUV. The impact of the crash caused the SUV to burst into flames and collide with a business.

While the SUV was unoccupied at the time of the crash, both the drive and passenger of the pickup had to be taken to a local hospital for unspecified injuries.

Newport News Fire Department crews were able to quickly contain the flames. A subsequent evaluation of the struck building found no issues with its structural integrity.
