Moped Rider Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run; Suspect in Custody [NEWPORT NEWS, VA]

A man was left with life-threatening injuries Wednesday afternoon after a pickup truck struck his moped and fled the scene at the intersection of Dresden Drive and Kendall Drive in Newport News, according to the Newport News Police Department. Officers responded to the intersection at approximately 2:53 p.m. on August 20, 2026, and located the injured man, who was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The preliminary investigation determined that the man was operating a moped when he was struck by a pickup truck whose driver did not stop after the collision. The pickup truck was subsequently located, and by Thursday afternoon, a suspect — believed to be an adult male — was taken into custody with the assistance of license plate readers.
