Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tragedy: One Fatality After Vehicle Plummets in Crash [SUFFOLK, VA]
Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tragedy: A 55-year-old Florida man tragically lost his life early Monday morning after his SUV plunged off the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel following a collision, leading to an extensive closure of Interstate 664.
The emergency call occurred at 6:58 a.m., and Suffolk Fire & Rescue reported one vehicle in the James River on the tunnel’s south side.
According to state police, a preliminary investigation revealed that the 55-year-old Orlando man was driving a 2011 Chevy Traverse southbound in the right lane.
The driver attempted a lane change, striking a 2005 Dodge Durango. The Traverse spun out of control, crossed the bridge wall, and plunged into the water. The driver’s identity has not been released, and the condition of the Durango remains unknown.
No structural damage to the bridge was reported. Suffolk police’s dive team located the vehicle, but strong winds and currents hindered initial recovery efforts. By the afternoon, state police confirmed that crews made a second recovery attempt.
Newport News Fire Department stated that at approximately 2:30 p.m., crews managed to tether the submerged vehicle to a tow truck on the bridge. The incident caused the closure of all lanes of I-664 at the bridge tunnel for several hours, with all lanes reopening shortly after 3 p.m.
Rescue operations involved crews from Norfolk, Newport News, and Suffolk, alongside state police, in the effort to locate and recover the vehicle.
