Medical Emergency Causes Police Cruiser to Flip on Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel [Virginia Beach, VA]

New details have emerged in a dramatic crash that shut down the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel for more than an hour in May. WAVY News 10 reported June 6, 2026, that a medical emergency suffered by the officer behind the wheel was the cause of the incident — and that no charges will be filed as a result.

The crash occurred on May 20, 2026, at approximately 12:40 p.m. on the southbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, near the one-mile post between the first island and the Virginia Beach shoreline. A CBBT District police SUV lost control, flipped, and broke through multiple sections of guardrail, leaving the vehicle partially hanging over the open water of the Chesapeake Bay. The vehicle came to rest near an electrical line. The officer was transported to a local hospital as a precaution and was not seriously injured. All southbound lanes were closed for more than an hour while crews responded to the scene, and a single lane closure remained in place during guardrail repairs.

For several weeks, the cause of the crash was listed under investigation. On June 6, CBBT Deputy Executive Director Tom Anderson told 10 On Your Side that the officer experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash. Based on that finding, no charges will be filed against the officer.

The “sudden medical emergency” doctrine is a recognized legal defense under Virginia law — and in some circumstances it can shield a driver from liability for a crash they did not intentionally cause. However, this defense has important limitations. Courts generally require that the medical event be both sudden and unforeseen.
