Children Hospitalized Following Vehicle Accident in Maryland [VIRGINIA BEACH, VA]
A vehicle accident in Maryland has been confirmed to involve the suspect connected to an AMBER Alert issued out of Virginia Beach, according to authorities. The single-vehicle crash occurred around 9 a.m. on Thursday, and it has left one child dead and several others injured.
The tragic incident happened on the ramp from the Capitol Beltway I-495/95 North onto Branch Avenue. According to Alan Doubleday, the public information director for the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department, the vehicle involved “rolled over several times,” resulting in severe injuries to its occupants.
In the vehicle were four individuals—one adult and three children. One child, who was in critical condition, was transported to a nearby hospital via a Maryland State Police helicopter.
Tragically, the child later succumbed to her injuries. The other two children and the adult were also seriously injured, though their injuries were described as non-life-threatening. They were transported to the hospital by ambulance for further treatment.
“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones who are grieving this morning,” said Police Chief Paul Neudigate in a statement. “This is an unimaginable tragedy, and on behalf of the VBPD, I extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this loss.”
The scene of the crash was cleared by 10:30 a.m., according to Doubleday, with the Maryland State Police (MSP) taking over the investigation.
An MSP spokesperson confirmed that the vehicle involved in the accident matched the description of the vehicle sought in the Virginia Beach AMBER Alert. This incident marks a heartbreaking conclusion to the search for the missing children.
The Virginia State Police had issued the AMBER Alert early Thursday morning after the Virginia Beach Police Department began investigating the abduction of three young children from a home on Jay Are Court on Wednesday evening.
The children—5-year-old Zayir Plummer, 7-year-old Zayin Plummer, and 16-month-old Zariyah Plummer—were reportedly taken by their father, 36-year-old Dana Demetrius Plummer. Before abducting the children, Plummer allegedly stabbed their mother and fled in a black 2024 Honda Passport SUV.
The AMBER Alert was canceled just after 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, following the crash, though authorities have yet to release further details about the abduction or the events leading up to the vehicle accident in Maryland.
