Dog Allegedly Bites Two-Year-Old Boy at Children’s Museum [PORTSMOUTH, VA]

PORTSMOUTH, VA- Dog Allegedly Bites Two-Year-Old Boy: Parents typically consider places like the Children’s Museum safe and welcoming environments for their kids, a sentiment shared by Ebony Chaney until an unfortunate incident left her two-year-old son injured.

The dog allegedly bit a two-year-old boy while Chaney and her family visited the Portsmouth Children’s Museum on a Saturday afternoon, an outing that took a frightening turn when a dog from the Portsmouth Humane Society reportedly bit her young child.

Chaney recalled that the day started as a family visit to the museum. They noticed the Portsmouth Humane Society had animals outside, drawing attention from families. Chaney’s husband expressed interest in adopting a dog, which led them to speak with a Humane Society worker about the adoption process. While they were engaged in conversation, their son was exploring the area.

According to Chaney, a worker held a Pitbull on a leash near a chair that her son approached. “As he tried to climb up on the chair, the dog snapped and bit him on the mouth,” she recounted. “The dog just sat back down afterward, but my son was bleeding.”

Chaney described the moment she realized her son was seriously injured, with blood leaking from his mouth. Despite the severity of the situation, Chaney stated that the Humane Society worker did little to mitigate the danger, failing to move the dog away from the area. “The dog was still sitting there while other children were around. The worker didn’t act with urgency,” Chaney told reporters, still visibly shaken by the incident.

Having a Pitbull herself, Chaney emphasized that she doesn’t believe all Pit bulls are aggressive, though this experience has caused her family emotional distress. “Our Pitbull is not a vicious dog,” she explained, “but after what happened, it’s been tough for me and my family. It’s hard to trust that our dog is okay when we’ve gone through this traumatic event.”

Chaney, determined to seek justice for her son, revealed her intention to sue both the Portsmouth Humane Society and the Children’s Museum. However, she acknowledged the challenges ahead, given the legal protections that government entities like the Humane Society might enjoy.

“Because they are a government entity, they could have immunity,” she said, expressing her frustration with what she views as an unfair precedent. “If it were an ordinary person being negligent with a Pitbull in a crowded children’s space, they would face legal consequences. This double standard doesn’t sit right with me.”

Compensation at Stake for the Victim

In cases like this, the potential compensation for the victim could include medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and future therapy costs for the child. Given the traumatic nature of the incident and the fact that the injury occurred in a setting meant for children, the compensation could also extend to cover psychological trauma for the child and the family.

Courts may also consider punitive damages if the Humane Society or the Children’s Museum is found to have been grossly negligent in their duty of care. A case like this highlights the importance of holding responsible parties accountable, especially when the safety of children is at risk.
