Virginia Police Report Spike in Crashes During Winter Storm

Virginia Police report a spike in crashes during the winter storm on Sunday, January 5, highlighting the challenges posed by hazardous road conditions. From noon to 3:30 p.m., Virginia State Police responded to 85 crashes, including three with injuries in the Wytheville District and 51 crashes, four involving injuries in the Salem District. Later, between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., authorities investigated another 20 crashes, three with injuries in the Wytheville District and 47 crashes, five with injuries in the Salem District.

Thankfully, no fatalities were reported. However, the rise in accidents emphasizes the importance of following safety measures when driving in winter weather. Virginia State Police continue to urge drivers to heed the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) advice to avoid travel during severe weather whenever possible.

Winter Driving Safety Tips

For those who must venture out during a winter storm, the Virginia State Police offer these essential tips:

  • Use headlights. Improved visibility helps you avoid icy patches and lets other drivers see you.
  • Reduce your speed. Adjust your driving speed to match road conditions, giving yourself ample time to react and stop safely.
  • Avoid tailgating. Maintain extra distance between your vehicle and others to prevent rear-end collisions on slippery roads.
  • Buckle up. A seatbelt minimizes injury risk during crashes caused by skidding or guardrail collisions.
  • Check your vehicle. Examining the tire tread, battery life, windshield wipers, and fluid levels ensures your car is winter-ready. Keep your gas tank full with an emergency kit, including a blanket, flashlight, water, snacks, and a phone charger.
