Teen Girl Killed in Jefferson Avenue Crash [NEWPORT NEWS, VA]

Teen Girl Killed in Jefferson Avenue Crash — a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken the Newport News community and left a family mourning the loss of a young life. On the evening of June 17, around 7:25 p.m., our officers at the Newport News Police Department responded to a devastating three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and St. Thomas Drive.
According to our preliminary investigation, a Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 17-year-old boy was speeding southbound on Jefferson Avenue. Witnesses reported the teen was weaving through traffic and making dangerous, erratic lane changes. As he approached the intersection, he collided with an Acura RDX SUV being driven by a woman who had just turned onto Jefferson Avenue from St. Thomas Drive and was traveling in the right-hand lane.
The force of the impact caused the Acura to crash into a nearby Honda Civic, which a woman in the adjacent lane was also driving. Fortunately, the drivers of the Acura and the Civic suffered no significant injuries.
Inside the Equinox was a 17-year-old girl—an innocent passenger who bore the brunt of the crash. She was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, she tragically succumbed to her injuries on June 25, eight days after the crash.
We can confirm that the teen driver of the Equinox was under the influence at the time of the crash. He has already been charged with DUI, and additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
What Kind of Compensation Can the Victim’s Family Pursue?
In heartbreaking cases like this, our legal system provides a path for justice through a wrongful death claim. The family of the victim may be entitled to compensation for:
-
Funeral and burial expenses
-
Medical bills related to the injuries
-
Loss of future earnings
-
Emotional trauma
-
Loss of companionship
Because the driver was allegedly intoxicated and engaging in reckless behavior, the family may also be eligible to pursue punitive damages, which are awarded to punish gross negligence and prevent similar behavior in the future.
