I-64 Crash in Newport News Leaves Victims Critically Injured [NEWPORT NEWS, VA]

A devastating I-64 crash in Newport News leaves victims critically injured following a violent multi-vehicle collision that occurred Friday night on the westbound lanes of Interstate 64. According to Virginia State Police, the crash took place between mile markers 250 and 249 shortly after 9:00 p.m., involving multiple vehicles and resulting in several injuries, including life-threatening trauma to a young child.

Preliminary investigations reveal that 45-year-old Willie I. Greene, the driver of a Dodge Durango, was speeding eastbound on I-64 when he rear-ended a 2022 Hyundai Sonata. The impact caused the Hyundai to lose control, veer off the road, strike a guardrail, and then spin into the westbound lanes of traffic.

Tragically, the Durango also crossed over the median into the westbound side, where it sideswiped a 2012 Toyota Tacoma before crashing head-on into a Nissan Altima. Inside the Altima, an improperly restrained five-year-old child was thrown from their car seat due to the force of the impact. The child sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency care.

As Virginia State Police and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) responded to the scene, all westbound lanes of I-64 were shut down to allow rescue teams and investigators to work safely. According to VDOT, the lanes remained closed until 1:21 a.m. Saturday.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, charges against the driver of the Dodge Durango are pending. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the conditions of the other drivers or passengers involved.
