PORTSMOUTH, VA. – Two Portsmouth police officers were injured early Sunday morning in a hit-and-run incident that has left the community in shock. The accident occurred just after 2 a.m. on the 4040 block of Missy Elliott Boulevard, where the officers were on duty.
One of the officers sustained significant injuries and was rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment. The severity of the injuries highlights the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the job that our officers bravely undertake daily.
According to the police report, some pedestrians were also struck during the incident. However, these individuals left the scene before they could be identified, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.
The driver responsible for this reckless act fled the scene but was later apprehended by the police on the interstate. The suspect was arrested on Sunday morning and is now facing serious charges, including DUI and maiming.
One of the pedestrians, who preferred to remain anonymous, spoke to the media about the chaotic moments leading up to the crash. “It was a lot of crowds and a lot of commotion. So, I was just standing with my sister and my brother, and then the next thing I know, it was like, boom, and I hit the ground,” she recalled.
The woman described how a car suddenly reversed into a crowd of people, striking her and the officers. “I got up and noticed an officer right beside me, gasping for air,” she said, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
The woman went on to describe the physical toll the accident has taken on her. “When the car hit me, I immediately felt numb on the entire left side of my body and had to go to the hospital.
Right now, I’m just feeling pretty much a lot of aches in my bones on all of my left side—my arm, my leg.” Her account underscores the long-lasting impact that such accidents can have on victims, both physically and emotionally.
In the wake of this tragic event, the Portsmouth community is calling for increased safety measures and better community engagement. Fahnta Hales, a resident of Virginia Beach with ties to Portsmouth, stressed the importance of building stronger connections between the police and the community.
“Community engagement is important. There’s a disconnect. I mean, we know that. So, when I say police officers are people too if we engage, you know we were raised on officer friendly, right?” Hales said. “Just like they protect us, we have to protect them.”
As the investigation continues, the question of compensation for the injured officers and pedestrians arises.
