Norfolk Accident: Lyft Driver Allegedly Hits Passenger with Vehicle Amid Dispute [NORFOLK, VA]
In a troubling Norfolk accident, police allege that on the morning of May 29th at around 9:30 a.m., 32-year-old Lyft driver Helen Settles hit her passenger with her car during an altercation before fleeing the scene.
The episode, which was recorded on a 911 audio call and captured by a neighboring home’s Ring camera, seems to have been deliberate, according to prosecutors. However, Settles’ defense attorney has indicated that the situation is more complex than it appears.
The confrontation reportedly began over a disagreement regarding directions, as disclosed during Settles’ bond hearing.
The situation intensified when Settles made a 911 call, during which dispatchers overheard the passenger threatening to leave the vehicle if the ride was canceled and refunded.
Subsequently, as the passenger began to exit the vehicle, Settles reportedly swung at them, prompting the passenger to retaliate.
Settles then reentered her vehicle, drove abruptly onto the curb, and struck the passenger and a nearby fence before leaving to pick up another fare.
Authorities have confirmed that the victim was hospitalized with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening. Settles was arrested and faces charges of malicious wounding.
The prosecution argued against granting bail, citing the intentional nature of Settles’ actions and her previous assault and battery conviction.
However, Settles’ attorney contended that additional information is yet to be revealed and highlighted her ongoing appeal against her previous conviction. He described Settles as a devoted mother and social worker, noting she was the first to call 911. It was confirmed that Settles and the passenger were strangers to each other.
Ultimately, the judge set a secured bond at $2,500, allowing Settles the possibility to remain with her family and children, who showed visible distress during the hearing.
In incidents like this, victims can pursue compensation for a variety of damages, including medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and psychological distress. Given the intentional nature of the driver’s actions, punitive damages might also be considered to deter similar misconduct in the future.
