I-264 Crashes at Newtown Road Slow Traffic [VIRGINIA BEACH, VA]

I-264 Crashes at Newtown Road Slow Traffic when two separate collisions on the westbound lanes brought rush-hour travel to a standstill Wednesday evening near mile marker 13.8 in Virginia Beach. Around 5:50 p.m., the Virginia State Police were dispatched to investigate two separate two-vehicle crashes, both of which occurred within a few hundred yards of each other. While both incidents resulted in significant vehicle damage, thankfully, no serious injuries were reported at the scene.

Emergency responders arrived promptly, securing the area and checking motorists for any signs of harm. The first crash involved a sedan and an SUV colliding on the left shoulder before spinning into the center lane. Moments later, a pickup truck and a compact car made contact near the right shoulder. Although airbags deployed in each case, all drivers and passengers declined transport to local hospitals after brief on-scene evaluations.

Western inside left shoulder, center lane, right lane, and even the right shoulder of I-264 were closed as state crews worked to remove wreckage and debris. Traffic backed up for over two miles, with drivers advised to use alternate routes via Newtown Road and Beach Boulevard. Commuters described standstill conditions that lasted nearly an hour, until cleanup operations concluded just before 7:00 p.m.

Beyond the immediate inconvenience and property damage, victims of these kinds of collisions may face financial and emotional repercussions. Even in the absence of physical injury, vehicle repair costs, towing fees, and potential rental car expenses can quickly add up. Should any hidden injuries—such as whiplash or soft-tissue trauma—become apparent days later, victims might also incur medical bills and lose income due to missed work.
