News: VDOT patroller killed while assisting disabled vehicle on I-65 in Hampton

HAMPTON, VA – A safety service patroller with VDOT was fatally struck by a vehicle while assisting another driver on I-65 early Sunday.

According to a report by WAVY, the patroller stopped on the right shoulder of the interstate near the Big Ether overpass at about 1:17 am.

Investigators say the patrollers was assisting the disabled vehicle when a third vehicle veered off the roadway and sideswiped his truck, eventually striking the 52-year-old man as well.

The victim, a 52-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

The driver of the striking vehicle, a 27-year-old woman, was taken into custody after responding officers determined she was impaired. She was booked into Hampton City Jail on charges of driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, obstruction and curse and abuse.
