Newport News Police Arrest Suspect Linked to Deadly Car Crash [Newport News, VA]

Newport News Police arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a deadly car accident that took place in November 2024. The tragic crash occurred at approximately 12:10 a.m. on November 14 at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Mercury Boulevard.

According to the initial investigation, the suspect, identified as Deyonte Lamont Perkins, was driving a Nissan Vera westbound on Mercury Boulevard when he allegedly ran a red light. His vehicle collided with a Chrysler 200 that had the right of way, traveling southbound on Jefferson Avenue. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to strike two additional cars.

Sadly, the driver of the Chrysler, 41-year-old Calvin Gilmore-Vick, was pronounced dead at the scene. Perkins sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Following an extensive investigation, authorities arrested Perkins on February 4, charging him with involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.
