Fire Truck Hose Malfunction Causes Multi-Vehicle Damage [VIRGINIA BEACH, VA]

When fire trucks race to an emergency, we expect them to bring aid—not destruction. However, a recent fire truck response for some Virginia Beach residents led to multi-vehicle damage, leaving them with unexpected repair costs and frustration.

The incident occurred at Birdneck Village Apartments, located off Birdneck Road. Many residents park their vehicles along the streets and in designated parking spaces. The Virginia Beach Fire Department (VBFD) was responding to a call, and as the fire truck was leaving the scene, it passed through the parking lot, maneuvering over several speed bumps.

According to VBFD, a 1¾-inch hose bundle detached from the back of the fire truck despite claims that the hose bed netting had been properly secured. As the truck moved forward, the loose hose became lodged under the front tire of a parked car, causing approximately 400 feet of hose to unravel across the lot.

“As it fully deployed, it tightened, resulting in the movement of several parked vehicles along the street,” VBFD stated. The situation escalated when the hose split at a coupling, creating a recoil effect that sent force both toward the fire engine and back toward the 24th Street turn.

Compensation for Victims of the Multi-Vehicle Damage

The vehicle owners affected by this incident could face costly damages. Depending on the extent of the impact, their cars may suffer scratches, dents, misalignment, or even serious structural damage. The financial burden of repairs should not fall on the victims, especially when an operational failure caused the damage.

Individuals who suffered property damage in this case may be entitled to compensation for repair costs, diminished vehicle value, rental car expenses, and even potential loss of use if their vehicle is undrivable. In some cases, owners may also seek compensation for emotional distress and inconvenience, particularly if they rely on their vehicle for work or essential transportation.
