Multiple People Injured in Four-Vehicle Crash on I-64 Westbound at I-564 Interchange in Norfolk [NORFOLK, VA]

A car accident in Norfolk, Virginia injured multiple people in a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 westbound at the Interstate 564 interchange, according to Virginia State Police and WAVY News 10. The crash was reported Monday, August 3, 2026, and caused significant traffic delays on one of the most heavily traveled stretches of interstate in the Hampton Roads region. The crash remains under investigation.
According to Virginia State Police, the crash began at approximately 2:17 p.m. when a Ford F-150 struck a Hyundai Sonata from behind. The Sonata was then pushed forward and struck a VDOT attenuator head-on. A dump truck subsequently struck the Sonata on the driver’s side. The force of that impact caused the Sonata to spin and collide with a Toyota Camry before coming to a stop. Multiple people were injured in the crash and transported for treatment. Additional details about the severity of injuries were not immediately available.
The I-64 and I-564 interchange in Norfolk is one of the most congested and crash-prone junctions in Hampton Roads, carrying traffic between the Downtown Tunnel, Naval Station Norfolk, the Midtown Tunnel, and all points east and west along the I-64 corridor. Because the crash involved a VDOT attenuator, investigators may also examine roadway conditions and other factors as the investigation continues.
When multiple vehicles are involved in a crash, determining how the collision occurred can be more complex than in a typical two-vehicle accident. Investigators may review factors such as vehicle speeds, following distances, roadway conditions, and witness statements to better understand the sequence of events.
Depending on the circumstances, a person injured in a multi-vehicle collision may have legal options, including the ability to pursue an auto accident claim under Virginia law. When roadway features or work zone equipment are involved, investigators may also examine whether those conditions played a role in the crash.
Virginia’s contributory negligence rule can significantly affect multi-vehicle accident claims. The specific facts surrounding how the collision occurred may play an important role in determining an injured person’s legal options under Virginia law.
