The circumstances that caused the crash have not been publicly disclosed, and the investigation remains ongoing. Investigators will work to determine what factors contributed to the collision before reaching any conclusions about its cause.

Single-vehicle crashes are among the most complex in personal injury and wrongful death law, precisely because there is no immediately identifiable other driver to hold responsible. But a single-vehicle crash does not automatically mean no one is at fault. Although many single-vehicle crashes are attributed to driver error, there are circumstances in which other factors may contribute. In some cases, defective vehicle components or hazardous roadway conditions may warrant further investigation. Determining whether another party bears legal responsibility depends on the specific facts of each crash.

Under Virginia law, the family of a person killed in a crash that results from another party’s negligence — whether a defective product manufacturer or a government body responsible for maintaining a safe roadway — may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Virginia’s wrongful death statute allows certain surviving family members, including spouses, children, and parents, to seek compensation for funeral and burial expenses, lost financial support, loss of companionship, and the grief and suffering caused by a sudden and unexpected loss.

In any fatal single-vehicle crash investigation, the early stages are critical. Physical evidence at the scene, data from the vehicle’s event data recorder, maintenance records, and road condition documentation can all help establish whether any external factors contributed to the crash. Once a scene is cleared and a vehicle is disposed of, that evidence can be gone permanently. Families who believe a loved one’s death may have involved more than driver error benefit from seeking legal counsel promptly, before opportunities to preserve key evidence are lost.
