Hampton Resident Identified as Fatality in Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Accident Involving SUV Plunge [Hampton,VA]

The person who tragically lost their life in Monday’s Monitor-Merrimac Bridge accident has been identified as Daniel Irizarry, a 55-year-old resident of Hampton.

Virginia State Police reported the incident around 6:58 a.m., detailing a severe two-vehicle collision on Interstate 664 southbound, near the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel (MMMBT). The accident resulted in one of the vehicles plunging into the water below.

According to investigators, the chain of events began when a 2011 Chevy Traverse, traveling in the right lane of Interstate 664 southbound, attempted to switch lanes. The vehicle collided with a 2005 Dodge Durango traveling in the left lane.

This impact caused the Traverse to spin out of control and ultimately crash through the bridge’s barrier, plunging into the water. The state police have confirmed that the Traverse was recovered from the water by 2:32 p.m. on the same day.

Unfortunately, Daniel Irizarry, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. State police have also confirmed that the MMMBT did not sustain any structural damage due to the crash.
