Woman Charged After Head-On Crash with Officer [CHESAPEAKE, VA]

Woman charged after head-on crash with officer—a serious overnight collision has left both a Chesapeake Police officer and a civilian driver recovering, and legal consequences are now unfolding. The crash occurred just after midnight on Friday along South Military Highway near Smith Avenue, when a woman driving a Ford Fusion the wrong way slammed head-on into a police cruiser.
Authorities report that the on-duty officer was traveling eastbound behind a truck when the unexpected occurred. The truck ahead of him swerved violently to avoid the Fusion, which was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes at high speed—directly into oncoming traffic.
Dennis Smith, the driver of the truck, gave a chilling account of the near-death moment to local news outlet 10 On Your Side.
“When I saw her, it was almost too late—she was doing 50 or more, flying toward me,” Smith recalled. “I don’t think she ever hit the brakes. I happened to look up, and in a split second, I realized those were headlights, not taillights. The car was coming straight at me.”
Smith managed to avoid a crash by jumping the curb just in time. “As soon as I jumped the curb, I heard boom,” he said. “I knew who she hit—he was right behind me.”
After pulling over, Smith said he rushed to help. “I’m asking him if he’s all right,” Smith explained. “He was like, ‘I’m getting her. I’m making sure she’s all right.’” The officer, despite being struck in a violent head-on impact, was already trying to assist the woman who hit him.
The woman is now facing criminal charges related to the wrong-way driving and subsequent crash. Investigators have not yet disclosed whether impairment or distraction played a role in the incident.
Compensation at Stake for the Victims
In devastating crashes like this, victims may be eligible for several types of compensation. Medical expenses, lost wages, physical therapy, emotional distress, and vehicle damage are among the common areas where compensation may be pursued. For first responders injured in the line of duty, there may also be additional layers of liability and long-term effects—especially if the injuries impact their ability to return to service.
