Widow Reflects as DUI Suspect’s Court Date Nears in Fatal Crash [VIRGINIA BEACH, VA]
The aftermath of a fatal crash has left a widow in deep reflection, grappling with a loss that shattered her life. Ebony Boone, the widow of Craig Boone, has spent the past ten months enduring immense grief after her husband’s tragic death in a DUI-related accident.
“It’s tough because right here is where our life together began. And because of someone’s careless act, he’s gone and never coming back,” Ebony expressed, her voice filled with sorrow.
Ebony spoke to 10 On Your Side at the place where she and Craig were married in 2021, where they had built a life together as husband and wife for two short years. That life was unexpectedly cut short in October when Craig, a VDOT safety service patroller, was struck and killed on I-64 in Hampton.
He was assisting a stranded motorist along the right shoulder when Alana Diomande, of Yorktown, allegedly veered off the road and sideswiped Boone’s VDOT truck, killing him on impact. “When my husband was killed, a part of me died too,” Ebony said, her grief still raw.
The tragedy highlights a disturbing trend that organizations like Drive Safe Hampton Roads are working tirelessly to address. “These types of crashes are 100% preventable,” stated Jim McElligott from Drive Safe Hampton Roads.
The organization advocates for several measures aimed at preventing impaired driving, which remains a leading cause of fatal crashes. They encourage people to take proactive steps to prevent drunk driving, such as taking keys from those unfit to drive and educating them on the dangers of driving under the influence.
Drive Safe Hampton Roads also spearheads several programs focused on road safety. Their three main committees cover occupant protection, impaired driving prevention, and specialized transportation safety.
One of their key initiatives, the 757 Sober Rides program, offers free transportation on nine major holidays. During this campaign, Hampton Roads residents can download the Lyft app, use a special code, and receive no-cost safe transportation (up to $15), ensuring those celebrating with alcohol have a safe ride home.
Boone’s family believes that had these resources been utilized, Craig’s life might have been spared. Now, as they await the sentencing of Alana Diomande, who has pleaded guilty to the charges, they hope justice will be served. “I’m hoping that justice is served,” said Crystal Artist, a close family friend, echoing the sentiments of those still reeling from the loss.
