VB Homicide Suspect’s Police Chase Ends in Crash [PORTSMOUTH, VA]

VB Homicide Suspect’s Police Chase Ends in Crash when officers in pursuit of a Virginia Beach homicide suspect saw the fleeing vehicle collide with a ditch-side mailbox on Dunkirk Street in Portsmouth late Wednesday night.

According to Portsmouth Police, the high-speed pursuit, which began after a call for a homicide suspect in Virginia Beach, spanned three jurisdictions before ending at approximately 10:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of Dunkirk Street. The crash prompted an immediate, coordinated response from local and state law enforcement agencies.

Video captured by WAVY 10 viewer Herman Sawyer shows a line of marked cruisers converging on the disabled vehicle just feet from his front yard. Police had earlier asked residents between Cedar Lane and Tyre Neck Road to shelter in place as tactical units combed the area for the suspect.

Sawyer’s footage reveals flashing lights and officers securing the scene under the looming “Road Closed” sign, underscoring the tense atmosphere that gripped the neighborhood.

By 1 a.m., the Portsmouth Police had lifted the shelter-in-place advisory, although they offered few specifics about whether the suspect had been apprehended or was still at large. Some residents told reporters they never received the emergency alert and expressed frustration and fear.

“I thought the police department would notify us on some kind of alert to watch out or keep our kids safe, ’cause this time in the morning, kids are getting ready for school,” said Marcus Campbell, who lives just blocks from where the chase concluded.

Just half an hour before the crash, Virginia Beach officers had responded to a report of a gunshot victim in the 3600 block of Harbinger Road—an incident now believed to be linked to the homicide under investigation.

While details about injuries remain scarce, the crash’s violent end underscores the physical and emotional toll on community members caught in the crossfire of law-enforcement operations.
