Two Pedestrians Lose Their Lives in Separate Hampton Accidents [HAMPTON, VA]

HAMPTON, VA. – Two pedestrians lost their lives in unrelated crashes on Friday, highlighting the urgent need for improved pedestrian safety measures in Hampton. One incident involved a hit-and-run, while the other saw the driver remain at the scene, according to Hampton Police.

The first crash occurred around 5:08 p.m. at Settlers Landing Road and LaSalle Avenue intersection. When police and fire units arrived, they found a woman with life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries.

Preliminary investigations suggest the woman was struck while crossing the road at the intersection. The driver fled the scene, and the Hampton Police Division Accident Reconstruction Team is actively investigating this hit-and-run.

Just 34 minutes later, at 5:42 p.m., a second incident was reported at Todds Lane and Aberdeen Road intersection. Police and emergency responders discovered a man suffering from critical injuries. He was also transported to a hospital, where he later died.

In this case, the driver involved remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The circumstances surrounding this crash are under review by the same Accident Reconstruction Team.

The Role of Infrastructure in Pedestrian Safety

Experts, such as Ian Thomas from the nonprofit organization America Walks, argue that the design of the intersections plays a significant role in these tragedies. The intersection at Settlers Landing and LaSalle, for instance, lacks basic pedestrian infrastructure such as crosswalks and walk lights.

“The problem with pedestrian safety is the way that roads are designed,” Thomas said. “Especially in areas where low-income individuals live and travel, these design flaws create dangerous conditions.”

Thomas emphasized the need for improvements like painted crosswalks, pedestrian crossing signals, and speed reductions in these areas. “These changes could save lives,” he added, urging the community and local authorities to prioritize pedestrian-friendly road designs.

Compensation for Victims’ Families

In cases like these, the families of the victims may be entitled to compensation for their losses. This compensation can cover medical expenses incurred before the victim’s death, funeral costs, loss of income, and the emotional distress caused by the tragedy.

Navigating the legal process after such a traumatic event can be overwhelming, but that’s where we at Breit Law Attorneys come in. Our experienced team specializes in advocating for victims and their families, ensuring they receive the justice and financial support they deserve.
