Two Drivers Apprehended for DUI Following Pursuit and Collision in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va.— In a series of events early Sunday morning, July 21, Virginia State Troopers apprehended two drivers for DUI following a high-speed chase and a subsequent collision. The incident began around 1:20 a.m. when Troopers attempted to stop a speeding Nissan Altima on I-64 in Chesapeake.

The driver of the Altima, Phillip Gassaway II, 47, from Portsmouth, Va., refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit that led onto the Military Highway exit. The chase continued as Gassaway sped down Cavalier Boulevard and onto Victory Boulevard.

During the pursuit, Gassaway ran a red light at the Victory Boulevard and Greenwood Drive intersection, crashing into a Chevrolet Equinox. The Equinox’s driver was transported to a local hospital with injuries, though they are expected to recover.

Gassaway was arrested at the scene and charged with multiple offenses, including failure to maintain control, reckless driving, eluding law enforcement, and driving on a suspended license. It was also revealed that Gassaway was wanted for a parole violation from 2019.

As police were managing the crash scene, another vehicle incident occurred. A Dodge Ram, driven by Christian Edmonds, 35, of Glen Allen, Va., erratically approached the area.

Edmonds was uncooperative with law enforcement, leading to his arrest for DUI. While Edmonds was being detained, a BMW driven by Keshayla M. Griffin, 29, of Chesapeake, Va., entered the crash scene, nearly hitting a State Trooper and Edmonds. Griffin was promptly stopped and arrested for DUI.

The victims of this incident, particularly the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, may be entitled to various forms of compensation. Such compensation could cover medical expenses, lost wages due to time away from work, pain and suffering, and potential property damage.
