Tragic I-95 Accident in Portsmouth: Victim’s Identity Confirmed [Portsmouth, VA]

PORTSMOUTH — A tragic I-95 accident in Portsmouth has claimed the life of 62-year-old Martin Osier from Bremen, Maine, according to the New Hampshire State Police. The fatal crash, which unfolded on Monday evening, resulted in the closure of the I-95 southbound lanes near Exit 3B for approximately four hours as authorities worked to investigate and clear the scene.
According to the police report, the crash occurred at around 6:40 p.m. Preliminary investigations suggest that Osier was traveling southbound on I-95 near Exit 7 when his 2010 Toyota Camry veered onto the left shoulder, sideswiping a cement barrier. Despite sustaining damage and having at least one tire partially deflated, Osier continued driving for about two miles before his vehicle came to a stop in the middle of the interstate’s travel lanes.
Moments later, a 2008 Subaru Legacy driven by a 31-year-old woman from Dover collided with the rear of Osier’s stationary Toyota, pushing it into an adjacent lane. Tragically, the Toyota was struck again by a 2021 Dodge Durango operated by a 56-year-old woman from Hanson, Massachusetts. Authorities are still investigating the events leading up to this devastating sequence of collisions, as the reasons for Osier’s vehicle stopping in the travel lanes remain unclear.
The Impact of the Crash and Potential Compensation
Fatal accidents like this one not only leave families grieving but also present significant legal and financial challenges. In such cases, the surviving family members may be entitled to compensation under New Hampshire’s wrongful death laws. This can include claims for medical expenses incurred before death, funeral costs, loss of income, and even non-economic damages such as pain and suffering and loss of companionship.
For other victims involved in the accident, such as the drivers and passengers of the other vehicles, compensation may also be pursued for medical bills, vehicle damage, lost wages, and emotional trauma resulting from the crash. Establishing liability in multi-vehicle accidents is often complex, and thorough investigations are necessary to determine who bears responsibility for the damages.
