Hampton Woman Charged with DUI After Fiery Crash in New Kent

A Hampton woman charged with DUI is now facing serious legal consequences after a late-night police pursuit in New Kent County ended in a fiery crash early Monday morning.
According to the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly after 12:20 a.m. on April 14, when deputies attempted to pull over a vehicle traveling westbound on Interstate 64. The driver, later identified as 35-year-old Tacara Skeeter-Wilson of Hampton, reportedly failed to maintain her lane, prompting the deputy to initiate a traffic stop.
Instead of complying, Skeeter-Wilson allegedly refused to stop and accelerated, leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit across several miles. Authorities say the chase came to a sudden and dangerous halt when the driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a tree. Moments later, the car caught fire.
Deputies were able to act quickly, pulling Skeeter-Wilson from the vehicle just before it became fully engulfed in flames. She was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for moderate injuries. As of the latest update, she remains hospitalized. In addition to being charged with driving under the influence, authorities have indicated that further charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
Incidents like these are stark reminders of how reckless driving under the influence can endanger not just the driver, but everyone else on the road. The potential for injury—or worse—is substantial, especially when high-speed pursuits and fiery crashes are involved.
Compensation for Victims in DUI Crashes
The legal consequences extend beyond the criminal charges for any victims involved, whether in another vehicle, passengers, or bystanders. There are also avenues for civil compensation that may be available to them. Victims of DUI-related crashes may be entitled to damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, property damage, and even emotional trauma. Punitive damages may also apply in cases involving gross negligence or reckless behavior.
