Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on London Bridge Road Leads to Charges [VIRGINIA BEACH, VA]

A devastating wrong-way collision on London Bridge Road in Virginia Beach has claimed the life of one man and left others with serious injuries. The crash, which occurred early Saturday morning, highlights once again the dangers of impaired and reckless driving and the devastating consequences it can have on victims and their families.
According to the Virginia Beach Police Department, officers responded to the 600 block of London Bridge Road shortly after 2 a.m. following reports of a serious crash. Upon arrival, investigators determined that 37-year-old Steven White of Norfolk was driving northbound on London Bridge Road when his vehicle was struck head-on by another car traveling in the wrong direction. Tragically, White was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle has since been identified as 27-year-old Erwin Marroquin-Herrera of Virginia Beach. Police reported that Marroquin-Herrera, along with an adult male passenger in his car, sustained significant injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following a thorough preliminary investigation, authorities charged Marroquin-Herrera with manslaughter, driving under the influence (DUI), and two counts of possession of fictitious identification. The Virginia Beach Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is continuing to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors.
The Impact on Victims and Families
For families like Steven White’s, the sudden loss of a loved one in such a tragic and preventable way can feel overwhelming. Beyond the emotional toll, survivors often face practical challenges — including funeral costs, medical bills, lost income, and other unexpected expenses. Victims injured in this kind of crash may also face long-term rehabilitation, therapy, or loss of earning capacity, further compounding the financial and emotional burden.
When an accident is caused by negligent or reckless behavior — such as driving under the influence or traveling the wrong way — victims and their families have the right to seek justice through the legal system. Compensation in these cases may include damages for medical expenses, lost wages, funeral costs, pain and suffering, and in some cases, punitive damages intended to hold reckless drivers accountable for their actions.
