Fatal Bike Crash on Northampton Boulevard [Virginia Beach, VA]

A Fatal Bike Crash on Northampton Boulevard in Virginia Beach tragically claimed the life of a local man on Wednesday night. Police confirmed that 54-year-old Douglas Bartholomew of Virginia Beach died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the busy roadway.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:16 p.m. in the 5700 block of Northampton Boulevard, near Diamond Springs Road and close to several businesses. According to the Virginia Beach Police Department, Bartholomew was attempting to cross into the southbound lanes when he rode against oncoming traffic. He was struck by a passing vehicle and sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities reported that the driver involved in the collision remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. No immediate charges have been announced as the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash continues.

Dangers of Bike Accidents on Busy Roads

Cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, especially on heavily trafficked routes such as Northampton Boulevard. With limited physical protection, even a single collision with a car can have devastating consequences. Virginia law requires drivers to exercise caution and share the road with bicyclists, but accidents often occur when visibility is low or when traffic is congested. Sadly, the outcome in this case was fatal.

Compensation at Stake for Victims’ Families

When a bicyclist loses their life in a crash, their family may be entitled to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. This type of compensation can cover medical expenses incurred before death, funeral and burial costs, lost income and financial support, as well as damages for emotional suffering and loss of companionship.

While no amount of money can truly replace the life of a loved one, pursuing compensation can help ease the financial burden that families often face after such a tragedy. It also holds negligent parties accountable and can play a role in promoting safer driving behaviors in the community.
