Eastbound Traffic Delays on I-64 Due to Vehicle Fire [HAMPTON, VA]
Traffic delays on I-64 were inevitable after a vehicle fire on eastbound Interstate 64 caused a significant backup for drivers approaching the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) on Wednesday afternoon.
A local WAVY viewer, caught in the gridlock, captured video footage of the incident, providing a firsthand account of the situation. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) confirmed that the fire occurred at mile marker 265.9, near King Street, forcing all eastbound lanes to shut down temporarily.
As the fire crews worked to clear the scene, traffic was backed up for nearly two miles, leaving drivers stranded for an extended period. By 3:30 p.m., VDOT cameras showed slow-moving traffic, and drivers heading east toward the HRBT continued to face additional delays. The backup stretched further, totaling about four miles. VDOT later announced that the vehicle fire had been cleared by 3:46 p.m., but residual traffic continued to cause congestion in the area.
While such incidents may seem like mere inconveniences, they can have far-reaching consequences for those directly involved in the fire or secondary collisions. A vehicle fire, like the one seen here, can lead to physical injuries, emotional trauma, and significant property damage for the vehicle owner and other affected drivers. If you have been involved in an accident, it is important to understand the type of compensation at stake for the victims and how experienced attorneys, like those at Breit Law, can assist.
When accidents like vehicle fires occur, victims are often entitled to various types of compensation. In this case, anyone injured or whose vehicle was damaged due to the fire or its aftermath may be eligible for:
- Medical Expenses: Whether it’s treatment for burns, smoke inhalation, or injuries caused by a secondary accident, victims can seek compensation to cover medical bills, hospital stays, and ongoing rehabilitation.
- Lost Wages: If the injuries sustained in the accident prevent you from returning to work, you may be entitled to recover lost wages or even future earnings if long-term disability results.
- Property Damage: If your vehicle was damaged in the fire or as a result of the traffic pile-up, you can pursue compensation to repair or replace your vehicle.
- Pain and Suffering: Beyond physical injuries, victims often experience emotional distress and mental anguish after traumatic events like vehicle fires. Compensation can help ease the psychological toll such incidents cause.
- Loss of Use and Enjoyment: In some cases, victims may also seek compensation for the loss of use of their vehicle and diminished enjoyment of life if they suffer long-term injuries.
