Driver Faces Charges After Striking Two Portsmouth Police Officers
A 29-year-old woman, Shaquilla Oneka Cuffee, faces multiple charges after she allegedly struck two Portsmouth police officers with her vehicle early Sunday morning. Driver Faces Charges of DUI and malicious wounding, along with several other offenses, as authorities investigate the incident.
This alarming event unfolded in the 4000 block of Missy Elliott Boulevard, where officers responded to a reported altercation and disorderly crowd.
The situation occurred just after 2 a.m. when officers arrived to disperse the disorderly crowd. While they were attempting to manage the situation, police say Cuffee drove her vehicle into two officers before fleeing the scene.
Both officers sustained injuries, with one requiring hospitalization. Fortunately, that officer has since been released from the hospital, but the incident remains a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face while performing their duties.
Cuffee’s attempt to flee the scene did not last long. Portsmouth police quickly located her vehicle and pulled her over on Interstate 264 eastbound. She was promptly taken into custody and now faces serious charges, including driving under the influence (DUI) and malicious wounding of law enforcement officers. Additional charges related to the crash are also pending.
The Consequences for the Victims
In cases like this, law enforcement officers injured while on duty may be entitled to various forms of compensation, including workers’ compensation and additional claims related to the personal injury caused by reckless or intentional acts.
In this particular case, the officers hit by the vehicle could face medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and lost wages due to the injuries sustained while serving their community. Additionally, they may experience pain and suffering that can affect their overall well-being and quality of life.
When law enforcement officers are injured, their families are also impacted, particularly if their injuries lead to long-term disabilities or the inability to work in their field. Compensation plays a vital role in ensuring that they receive the necessary medical care and financial support to recover fully and return to their duties or, in severe cases, find alternative employment.
