Driver Charged Following Granby Street Fire [NORFOLK, VA]

Driver Charged Following Granby Street Fire after a dramatic incident in Norfolk Tuesday morning left traffic snarled and raised serious safety concerns. According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), the blaze caused significant disruptions on Interstate 64 as authorities rushed to secure the area and restore traffic flow.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) confirmed that all eastbound lanes on I-64 near Granby Street were closed shortly after 6:50 a.m. when the fire broke out. Early reports indicated that a tractor-trailer had caught fire, leading to fears of a large-scale diesel spill. However, later images released by VSP clarified that the vehicle involved was a bucket truck, not a tractor-trailer as initially believed.

Investigators revealed that the truck, a 2013 International operated by Tyler Davis, veered off the roadway and struck an attenuator device. The impact ruptured the vehicle’s fuel tank, causing diesel to spill across the roadway. Authorities believe a spark from the collision ignited the fuel, triggering the intense flames that engulfed the truck.

Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene, working to control the fire and prevent further hazards from the spilled diesel. Motorists in the area experienced significant delays as lanes were shut down for cleanup and investigation. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but the fire highlighted the dangers of roadway accidents involving heavy vehicles and flammable substances.

The Compensation at Stake for Victims

In incidents like this, victims—including motorists delayed or put at risk, nearby businesses affected by road closures, and those suffering injuries—may be entitled to different forms of compensation. This can include medical expenses for any injuries sustained, reimbursement for lost wages if work is missed due to the accident, and compensation for property damage if vehicles were harmed during the incident. In cases of severe negligence, victims may also seek compensation for pain and suffering, especially if the incident results in lasting trauma or financial strain.
