Cyclist Fatally Struck by Vehicle in Virginia Beach [Virginia Beach, VA]
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Tragedy struck in Virginia Beach on Thursday afternoon when a cyclist was fatally injured after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Indian River Road and Sand Pebbles Drive. The collision also resulted in injuries to one other individual.
According to Virginia Beach Police, the victim, 49-year-old Colin Sutton, was transported to the hospital following the crash but tragically succumbed to his injuries. The driver involved in the incident is reported to be in stable condition.
Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate expressed his condolences to Sutton’s family and friends in a public statement, noting the emotional toll of the incident. “On behalf of the Virginia Beach Police Department, I offer my condolences to Mr. Sutton’s family and friends,” Neudigate said.
He also took the opportunity to urge both pedestrians and cyclists to exercise caution when crossing roadways, particularly in areas where traffic crashes involving cyclists and pedestrians have been on the rise. He advised cyclists and pedestrians to be vigilant of traffic signals, use marked crosswalks, and prioritize safety in high-traffic areas.
Residents, such as Jackie Koch, a neighbor in the vicinity, have long been concerned about the dangerous nature of this intersection. She described it as a frequent site of accidents. “I hate this intersection. It’s just so ridiculous,” Koch said. “I’m always afraid that I’m going to get a head-on collision right here. We call it the Triangle of death because there are so many accidents in this area. It’s just the stupidest intersection, and the way they built it is flawed.”
Koch voiced concerns about the inadequate signage at the intersection and how it contributes to confusion and danger for both drivers and pedestrians. “People run the red lights all the time,” she explained. “The signs don’t help people know how to navigate the intersection correctly, and that’s what leads to accidents.” She further called for improvements to the signage, such as clearer markings for merging lanes, or even an overpass, to prevent further tragedies.
In response to the incident, all lanes of Indian River Road between Indian Lakes Boulevard and Sand Pebbles Drive were temporarily closed as investigators processed the scene. While the investigation continues, authorities have indicated that they do not anticipate any charges being filed related to the incident.
