Construction Zone Crash on I-64 Leaves Worker Seriously Hurt [VIRGINIA BEACH, VA]

A construction zone crash on I-64 leaves a worker seriously hurt after a vehicle veered into a closed-off work area late Wednesday night. The incident occurred just before midnight near Indian River Road, where troopers responded to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian in a construction zone.
According to Virginia State Police, 55-year-old Anthony Laray Jones was driving a 2016 Honda sedan eastbound on I-64 when he swerved into a coned-off lane designated for ongoing roadwork. Inside that lane, a 44-year-old construction worker was operating a self-propelled saw cutter, engaged in routine concrete cutting, when he was struck head-on by the vehicle. The worker sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and was promptly transported for emergency medical care.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Jones failed to maintain his lane and entered the construction zone unlawfully, causing the severe collision. Authorities arrested Jones at the scene. He is now facing a long list of charges, including DUI/maiming, refusal to take a breath test, disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice, reckless driving, unsafe lane change, and operating a vehicle without insurance. Jones is currently being held without bond at the Virginia Beach City Jail.
Construction zones are hazardous enough without the added risk of impaired or reckless drivers entering clearly marked work areas. This crash serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that road crews face daily while performing essential infrastructure work. Every precaution had been taken to close off the lane safely, yet a lapse in judgment and responsibility led to devastating consequences for an innocent worker.
For injured workers and their families, accidents like this can lead to overwhelming physical, emotional, and financial challenges. Medical expenses, lost wages, long-term rehabilitation, and emotional trauma can take a heavy toll. In this case, the injured construction worker may be entitled to compensation covering medical treatment, pain and suffering, future loss of income, and possibly punitive damages due to the reckless nature of the incident.
