Virginia State Police Respond to Hundreds of Crashes Amid Winter Storm

As winter weather continues to impact Virginia, Virginia State Police report hundreds of winter crashes and urge drivers to stay off the roads for their safety. Since midnight on February 11, 2025, and as of 4 p.m. on February 12, 2025, police have responded to 951 crashes statewide, including 95 that resulted in injuries. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.

In southwestern Virginia, the VSP Wytheville Division, which covers a significant portion of the region, has recorded 122 crashes, 10 of which involved reported injuries. Authorities are emphasizing the dangers of traveling in these conditions and advising motorists to exercise extreme caution.

Winter Driving Safety Tips

To help prevent accidents and ensure road safety, Virginia State Police have shared the following winter driving recommendations:

  • Use Headlights: Visibility is crucial in poor weather. Keeping headlights on helps drivers spot dangerous road conditions and allows others to see your vehicle.
  • Reduce Speed: Black ice and slick patches can form even when roads appear clear. Adjusting your speed for the conditions can provide more reaction time and prevent skidding or loss of control.
  • Avoid Tailgating: Slippery roads require increased stopping distance. Maintaining extra space between vehicles can prevent rear-end collisions.
  • Buckle Up: Many winter crashes involve vehicles sliding into guardrails, off-road ditches, or colliding with other cars. A seatbelt can protect occupants from severe injuries.
  • Inspect Your Vehicle: Before heading out, check tire tread, windshield wipers, battery life, and fluid levels. Ensuring your vehicle is prepared for winter conditions reduces the risk of mechanical failures.
  • Pack Essentials: Keep an emergency kit in your car, including a scraper, blanket, water, snacks, a phone charger, and a flashlight. These items can be lifesaving if you are stranded.

While law enforcement and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) work to clear roads and address hazardous areas, drivers must take personal responsibility by following these precautions.

Compensation for Winter Crash Victims

Compensation may be available for those injured in these winter weather crashes to cover medical expenses, lost wages, vehicle repairs, pain and suffering, and other damages. Victims may be entitled to financial recovery if another driver’s negligence—speeding, following too closely, or failing to maintain control—caused the accident. Even in cases where road conditions contributed to a crash, a thorough investigation can determine if a liable party, such as a reckless driver or an entity responsible for road maintenance, is accountable.
