Newport News hit-and-run survivor speaks out: Nelson Viera-Green had recently embraced cycling as his go-to fitness routine when tragedy struck on a quiet Newport News stretch. What began as a routine ride turned into a nightmare when a fleeing driver collided with Viera-Green’s bicycle late one evening, leaving him with severe injuries and unanswered questions.

Earlier this month, just after 9:30 p.m. on May 8, Newport News police were summoned to Harpersville Road near Ferguson Lane. There, they discovered Viera-Green lying injured beside his wrecked bike. Witnesses reported a vehicle speeding off moments after the impact. “They hit somebody and just kept going,” Viera-Green recounted. “I don’t know how you can do that to somebody.” The hit-and-run left the Rivers Casino poker dealer unable to recall the crash itself, awakening hours later in a hospital bed, frightened and disoriented.

Viera-Green’s injuries were extensive: multiple fractures in his hand, a broken leg, and a concussion that has brought persistent memory lapses and throbbing headaches. “I’ve been having nothing but constant headaches,” he shared. With his health insurance not kicking in until July and no income while recuperating, the young dealer has been forced to rely on the goodwill of his community. His co-workers at Rivers Casino Portsmouth set up a GoFundMe campaign, which has already raised over $7,000, giving him “courage and strength to move forward,” as he gratefully acknowledged.
