Hazardous Norfolk Intersection Sparks Worry Over Pedestrian Safety [ Norfolk, VA]
NORFOLK, Va. — The Hazardous Norfolk intersection at Lafayette Boulevard and Orleans Circle has sparked growing concerns among residents, who say crossing the busy street has become almost impossible. For years, locals relied on a simple, effective safety method, but now that it has been taken away, fears for pedestrian safety have escalated.
“Lafayette Boulevard has been a problem for the 30 years I’ve lived here,” longtime resident Lisa Billow said. The issue, according to Billow and others, is the excessive speeding along this stretch of road. “People treat it like the Lafayette Motor Speedway,” commented another concerned resident. “It’s a miracle we haven’t seen a fatality yet.”
The recurring problem is not just limited to speeding. Neighbors have pointed out that crossing the street has become increasingly hazardous. Despite Norfolk’s efforts to install pedestrian beacons with flashing lights and speed signs, the dangerous conditions persist.
To address the issue, one resident took action. In January, Lisa Billow introduced a simple yet effective safety solution—See Me Flags. This crosswalk safety system involves pedestrians carrying bright flags as they cross the street, which draws the attention of drivers, encouraging them to slow down.
“The drivers see that flag moving, it catches their attention, and they hesitate, giving pedestrians a safer window to cross,” Billow explained. For eight months, the flags seemed to be making a difference. “It’s kind of unsurprisingly effective,” she added.
However, the positive impact was short-lived. Residents were disheartened when the See Me Flags were mysteriously removed. According to neighbors, a city employee was seen taking them down, but no alternative safety measures have been introduced.
“I’m not a traffic engineer,” Billow said, “but it seems to me that a real pedestrian red light would solve a lot of problems.”
Another resident suggested, “Speed bumps would be a great addition. I don’t understand why we haven’t implemented them yet.”
Frustrated by the lack of solutions, residents are eager to collaborate with the city to find a safer crossing method for the hazardous Norfolk intersection. While they acknowledge that the See Me Flags weren’t intended as a permanent fix, the community believes the city needs to take more responsibility in ensuring pedestrian safety.
The Type of Compensation at Stake for Victims
When pedestrian safety is neglected, the potential for serious accidents becomes real. If someone were to suffer an injury or fatality at this hazardous Norfolk intersection, the victim or their family could be entitled to significant compensation. Injured pedestrians may be eligible for various forms of compensation, including medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and even punitive damages in cases of gross negligence. In the tragic event of a fatal accident, wrongful death claims can provide financial relief to surviving family members, covering funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and emotional distress.
