Driver charged with DUI-Manslaughter after fatal crash on Military Highway [CHESAPEAKE, VA]

A tragic incident unfolded late Tuesday night as a driver was charged with DUI-manslaughter after a fatal crash on Military Highway in Chesapeake, Virginia. According to the Chesapeake Police Department, officers responded to the 2600 block of Military Highway at approximately 11:21 p.m. following reports of a two-vehicle collision.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that a van, traveling westbound, had collided with a stationary vehicle that was pulled over on the right shoulder of the roadway. At the time of the crash, two people were standing outside the parked vehicle while one occupant remained inside.
Tragically, one of the individuals who had exited the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining pedestrian, the occupant of the parked vehicle, and the driver of the van were all transported to nearby hospitals. Authorities have not yet released the extent of their injuries.
The driver of the van, identified by police as 36-year-old Victoria Pipkin, has since been discharged from the hospital. She has now been officially charged with felony DUI-manslaughter in connection with the deadly crash. The case is currently under investigation by the Chesapeake Police Crash Reconstruction Team, who continue to piece together the events leading up to the fatal collision.
What Compensation Could Be at Stake for the Victims?
In devastating cases like this, the victims and their families may be eligible to pursue significant compensation under Virginia’s civil laws. Wrongful death claims often include damages for funeral and burial costs, loss of financial support, emotional suffering, and the loss of companionship. Surviving victims who sustained injuries may also seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, future rehabilitation costs, and pain and suffering.
In DUI-related crashes, where negligence is evident, victims may be entitled to punitive damages as well, meant to punish the at-fault party for gross misconduct and deter similar behavior. These claims can be complex and emotionally draining, especially when dealing with insurance companies that are quick to minimize payouts or shift blame.
