Chesapeake Police Probe Deadly Collision on Hanbury Road [CHESAPEAKE, VA]

Chesapeake Police Probe Deadly Collision on Hanbury Road as investigators work to piece together the moments leading up to the single-vehicle crash that claimed one life early Saturday morning.

At approximately 6:35 a.m., dispatchers with the Chesapeake Police Department received reports of a vehicle veering off course between the 300 and 400 blocks of Hanbury Road West. Responding officers and paramedics arrived within minutes, but despite their efforts, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family during this tragic time,” stated a Chesapeake Police Public Information Officer, offering sympathy while urging motorists to obey posted speed limits and remain vigilant of changing road conditions, especially at dawn when visibility can be limited.

Authorities temporarily closed the affected stretch of Hanbury Road West to facilitate a thorough on-scene examination. “We must determine exactly what factors contributed to this accident,” explained one officer at the perimeter tape. “Right now, the crash is under active investigation.”

Specialists from the department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit were called in to document tire marks, roadway debris, and vehicle damage, hoping those details will reveal whether speed, mechanical failure, road surface conditions or another element played a critical role.

Data from Virginia’s Traffic Records Electronic Data System (TREDS) underscores the ongoing safety challenges on Hanbury Road West. Over the past five years, there have been 29 documented collisions along this corridor, resulting in a dozen injuries and, regrettably, this week’s fatality.

While the reasons behind those wrecks vary—from distracted driving to inclement weather—the pattern has prompted both law enforcement and local advocacy groups to call for enhanced signage and possible roadway redesign.

As of 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, crews were still on scene, clearing debris and repaving damaged asphalt before reopening the roadway to commuters. Drivers were encouraged to seek alternate routes, and Chesapeake Police reminded the public that any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with dash-cam or surveillance footage, should contact the department’s Traffic Division.
