Hampton Man Arrested in Fatal West Mercury Blvd Crash [Hampton, VA]

Hampton Man Arrested in Fatal West Mercury Blvd Crash after a thorough inquiry into a multi-vehicle collision that claimed one life and left others injured, law enforcement has taken 32-year-old Ajani Wiggins into custody.

Wiggins, a Hampton resident, now faces charges including involuntary manslaughter—a Class 5 felony under Virginia law—and driving on a suspended license, according to the Hampton Police Division.

The tragic incident occurred on April 8 at the busy junction of West Mercury Boulevard and Martha Lee Drive, adjacent to the Briarfield neighborhood.

First responders discovered three vehicles clustered in the eastbound lanes after one westbound car failed to slow in time and plowed into the rear of two other vehicles. Emergency personnel pronounced 73-year-old Lucille McPherson of Newport News dead at the scene.

A second motorist was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries, while a third individual received on-site treatment and was released.

As we examine the sequence of events, our thoughts remain with the McPherson family and all those affected by this avoidable tragedy. The investigation, which included witness interviews and extensive forensic analysis, helped establish the chain of impact and led to Wiggins’s arrest.

Police reports indicate speed and license status as key factors, underscoring the critical importance of road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.

Victims and their families may be eligible for several forms of compensation under Virginia law. Wrongful death statutes allow surviving loved ones to pursue damages for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and the decedent’s anticipated earnings.

Injured parties can seek recovery for medical bills, ongoing rehabilitation costs, pain and suffering, and lost wages. In cases involving clear negligence—such as driving while suspended—the scope of damages can include punitive awards intended to deter similar conduct in the future.
